Reno Aircraft's Position on MOSAIC: Waiting for Final Rulings

The Modernization of Special Airworthiness Certification (MOSAIC) is a critical initiative, and while its final requirements were not announced at Oshkosh 2024—nor confirmed within the decision-making circles we are in contact with—we remain cautiously optimistic about its potential impact on the aviation community.

The Current State of MOSAIC

The preliminary proposals surrounding MOSAIC include a clean stall speed of 54 knots and rumors of differentiation between pilot classes and aircraft capabilities. While these concepts remain unconfirmed, they hint at significant changes, such as:

  • MTOW Restrictions: Variations in maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) depending on whether the pilot holds a Sport Pilot License or a Private Pilot License (PPL (Private Pilot License)).

  • Seating Configurations: Potential limits on the number of seats based on pilot class.

These speculations, while logical, are still under consideration, leaving manufacturers like Reno Aircraft to navigate a moving target.

Why We Are Waiting

Rushing into test flights before MOSAIC’s final ruling could mean developing and testing aircraft under assumptions that may not hold true. For instance, aspects like weight and balance (W&B) calculations, placement of rescue systems, and positioning of ancillary components such as batteries could be significantly affected by the final regulations.

Furthermore, we aim to maximize the room MOSAIC provides. For example, even a modest adjustment from a 54-knot clean stall speed to 58 knots could open up new design possibilities. This flexibility would allow us to explore innovative solutions, such as developing two wing versions: one optimized for Sport Pilots and another that pushes the performance envelope for Private Pilot License holders. This dual approach enables us to cater to both pilot classes without compromise.

By waiting for clarity, we can:

  1. Optimize Our Testing: Conduct test flights with precise configurations that meet finalized requirements.

  2. Maximize Efficiency: Avoid unnecessary revisions to design and testing processes.

  3. Deliver Value: Ensure our aircraft is perfectly tailored to the needs of both Sport and PPL (Private Pilot License) pilots from day one.

  • Engine Options: Customers can choose from the renowned Rotax power plant, a new multi-fuel 265hp turbo engine, or a 250hp turbine engine.

    • Fuel Savings: Our new piston technology significantly reduces fuel costs, offering up to 50% savings with MOGAS or Diesel.

    • Flexibility: Both engines are capable of running on JetFuel, ensuring fuel independence for interstate flights.
